Actively managing ESG ratings
Get the most out of EcoVadis, CDP, MSCI, ISS, Sustainalytics, and S&P!
ESG ratings play a critical role in shaping investor perception, securing financing, and building reputation. We help you develop a clear strategy to effectively manage and improve your ratings.
The biggest challenges regarding ESG ratings
time consumption
Preparing ESG ratings takes time and resources. ESG data must be prepared multiple times for different ratings, processes must be documented, and various requirements must be met.
Lack of comparability
Unclear requirements and different methodologies make it difficult to work with ESG ratings. Providers such as CDP, EcoVadis, and S&P use their own systems, terminology, and assessment approaches. This makes consistent and efficient processing significantly more complex.
Missing feedback & transparency
Many ESG ratings are a black box. The assessment methodologies are difficult to understand, and feedback is lacking, especially for unsolicited ratings (e.g., MSCI, ISS ESG). Rating agencies are difficult to reach, which complicates any discussion regarding their assessment methodologies.

Background information: How do rating agencies work?
Currently, there are over 400 ESG ratings worldwide – but not all are equally important. The largest ESG rating agencies with a broad approach and high acceptance among investors include ISS ESG, MSCI ESG and Sustainalytics. But if needed, we can also dive into specialized ESG ratings such as CDP’s environmental rating or EcoVadis’ supply chain rating.
CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) is a global disclosure platform for climate, water, and forest conservation topics. Companies submit their data, which is then assessed and published.
The results provide transparency for investors, customers, and other stakeholders.
Important: This ESG rating is completed by the companies themselves, and companies can initiate their own ESG rating.
EcoVadis is a globally recognized platform for assessing companies’ sustainability performance regarding environmental topics, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
The assessment is conducted using a structured scorecard and is frequently used by companies to promote transparency in the supply chain.
Important: The ESG rating is completed by the companies themselves, and companies can initiate their own ESG rating.
The MSCI ESG Rating evaluates companies based on their ESG risks and opportunities relative to their competitors.
The rating is assigned on a scale from AAA to CCC and is frequently used by investors to make sustainable investment decisions.
Important: The rating is determined without the company’s involvement.
ISS ESG evaluates companies using a comprehensive set of ESG indicators covering environmental, social, and governance factors.
The results help investors assess sustainability risks and performance.
Important: The rating is prepared without the company’s involvement.
The Sustainalytics ESG Risk Rating measures the extent to which a company is exposed to ESG risks and how well these risks are managed.
The score ranges from “negligible risk” to “severe risk.”
Important: The rating is compiled without the company’s involvement.
The S&P Global ESG Score evaluates companies’ sustainability performance based on the annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). This involves analyzing numerous ESG criteria across the environmental, social, and governance categories.
The rating is on a scale of 0 to 100 and allows for a comparison of sustainability performance within an industry.
Important: The rating is based on company data from the CSA as well as publicly available information.
